On this week’s episode of the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast, Jenny Smith from the HSE National Social Inclusion Office and Rob from the Ana Liffey Drugs Project join us to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. They offer practical advice on overdose recognition, the importance of naloxone, and peer-led interventions that support communities affected by drug-related harm. This episode highlights the need for compassion, training, and open dialogue to reduce stigma and save lives.

The physical and mental health benefits of regular physical activity are immense.  Yet across Ireland most people are not active enough to experience these benefits.  Only 1 in 4 primary school children and 1 in 8 teenagers are active enough to meet Every Move Counts: national physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines.  For adults it’s 4 in 10.

Register to join us on Wednesday 24 September, 2:00pm – 3:15pm to hear about:

  • The forthcoming National Physical Activity Framework and Action Plan 2024-2028; and
  • How everyone working in healthcare can help promote physical activity and make Every Move Count.

There is currently a national shortage of foster carers in Ireland, coupled with a big demand for foster carers in Ireland, particularly in Dublin. Tusla Child & Family Agency are seeking assistance to raise awareness for the urgent need for foster carers in the community, as they aim to keep children in their own community, schools, friends, clubs. They are currently running a range of initiatives, and information sessions in person for groups from all different culture/religion backgrounds who may have experience with working with children with additional needs or interested in general fostering.

Please share the attached leaflet with your networks or if interested to hear more about fostering a child, or to find out more about these information sessions, please register at Tusla.fostering@tusla.ie to get the link to join.

‘Making Every Contact Count Signposting for Older People’

[Form 249b] [attached] is a collaborative piece of work between Susan Daly (Clinical Development Co-ordinator Cork/ Kerry Community Hospitals/ Nursing Units) and  Maire O Leary (MECC Lead Cork/ Kerry). It was developed as a means of sharing detailed information and contact details for key services and supports available to older adults and their carers across Cork and Kerry, promoting wellbeing, chronic disease management and prevention and includes key information on Advocacy Services, the Decision Support Services, Safeguarding and An Garda Siochana.   Our hope is that this signposting resource will increase older adults [and their carers] awareness of and uptake of self-care options, national initiatives and local supports available within the HSE SW Region to manage and prevent chronic illness, promote wellbeing and independence and empower older adults to voice concerns, seek support and plan for their future.

  • This collaborative work was developed in conjunction with the adapted MECC education session delivered at the Q1 2025 Quarterly Clinical Cuppa. This workshop can be booked directly for your service by contacting oleary@hse.ie
  • The resource is available to purchase through Forrest Print and Stationary by quoting form 249B – in print, it is an A4 hard card cover pad with 100 double sided, coloured, signposting pages with contact details and live QR codes to the various resources available [a directory specific to the HSE SW Region]. For further details on ordering the resource contact Daly@hse.ie.
