The roll-out has been slow but it is underway.

All-terrain beach wheelchairs are now available at the blue-flag Redbarn Beach in Youghal, East Cork. The facility, which is free to use although still quite limited, is also available at the Warren Beach, Rosscarbery.

Meanwhile, two state-of-the-art beach wheelchairs purchased with funds raised by Clonakilty Camogie Club remain unavailable to visitors at Inchydoney Beach until a solution can be found for storing them.

The wheelchair in Youghal is the first one of its kind in East Cork and is “the result of a partnership between Cork County Council, the Disability Federation of Ireland, Cork Sports Partnership, Irish Wheelchair Association Sport, and the Quality Hotel & Leisure Centre Redbarn.” said a spokesperson for the initiative.

The Hippocampe wheelchair can be booked for free in two-hour slots from 11am to 7pm at Club Vitae Leisure Centre, Redbarn, Youghal (Eircode: P36RV02) and you can contact them on 024 93095 to reserve your slot.
